We can read these meters without going on your property.
Normal meters
There have been some changes to the designs over the years, so the meter you have may not look exactly like one of these.
Here are some examples of the brands that we currently install.
Elster brand meters
These meters have four black numbers and four white numbers.
RMC brand meters
These meters have five black numbers and four clock faced dials.
Itron brand meters
These meters have eight numbers and one clock faced dial.
Recycled water meters
If you have recycled water, you'll have two meters - a normal meter for your drinking water and a separate meter for recycled water.
All meters for recycled water are purple.
Digital meters
We're currently trialling digital meters in the Liverpool and Nepean area.Find out more about digital meters.
If it's not at the front, it may be in your backyard or elsewhere on your property.
If you can't find the meter, call us on 13 20 92. We can tell you where it is or confirm that you don't have one.
There may be a few reasons why you don't have a meter.
If you live in a unit
You may not have your own meter if you live in a unit. Instead, there will be a meter at the front of your complex that all the units share.
If you'd like your own meter, discuss options with your owners corporation. They may need to ask a licensed plumber if it's possible to fit a meter.
The owners corporation is responsible for any plumbing and meter installation costs.
If you'd like to know more, read our Multi-level individual metering guide.
If you share your water pipes with other properties
You won't have your own meter if you share your water pipes with other properties. Generally, this is if you live in an old terrace house or a semi-detached house.
If you'd like your own meter, you must apply for a new water connection at Sydney Water Tap in™. You'll have to discuss this option with all the other property owners before you apply.
If your water pipes are made of galvanised iron
You may not have a meter if your water pipes are made of galvanised iron. This is because these pipes can break when we install a meter.
If you'd like a meter, discuss options with a licenced plumber. They may need to replace some of the galvanised pipe with copper pipe.
You're responsible for any plumbing costs.
Existing property
If you have an existing property, we'll install a meter if:
- there is a meter space on your water service
- the space is the right size.
To find out how much meter space you need, read our Water meter installation guide.
To get a meter, simply apply for a water meter installation at Sydney Water Tap in™. When you apply, you have two choices:
- Ask us to install the meter - we'll install it free of charge within 10 working days once we approve your application.
- Tell us your plumber will install the meter - they must apply for a connection approval letter at Sydney Water Tap in™. Once we approve their application, they can collect the meter from Skilltech. You're responsible for the plumbing costs.
New property
These services are typically in new areas.
If you have a water service like the one in the picture, simply apply for a water meter installation at Sydney Water Tap in™.
When you apply, you must ask us to install the meter.
Please call us on 13 20 92 if you can't complete the form.
Remotely read meters measure your water use just like regular meters, but we can read them without going on your property.
